Additional information

João IV's accession in December 1640 ended sixty years of Portuguese subjugation under the Spanish Crown — the so-called Iberian Union — and the new Braganza regime needed coinage fast. These half tostões were among the first silver pieces struck under restored Portuguese authority, produced at Lisbon in the immediate aftermath of the restoration, when reasserting a distinct monetary identity carried direct political urgency.

The range of Gomes references listed here reflects multiple die marriages produced in quick succession as the mint scrambled to meet demand. Minor variations in the date placement relative to the cross account for the separate catalog numbers.
