| Aversbeschreibung | Central field bearing the Portuguese royal arms in cross formation: five escutcheons arranged in a quincunx pattern, each charged with five bezants (quinas) representing the five Moorish kings defeated at the Battle of Ourique. The shields are rendered in the medieval heraldic tradition characteristic of hammered coinage of the Manueline-Joanine period. The design is enclosed within a double beaded circle. The circular Latin legend, partially legible due to variable die alignment and characteristic striking irregularity, runs along the outer border and reads + IOHAИES:R:P:ET:A:DG, identifying João III as King of Portugal and the Algarves, by the Grace of God. |

| Reversbeschreibung | Central field displaying a plain cross pattée within a inner circle, with a small pellet or annulet placed in each of the four quadrants formed by the arms of the cross, a device typical of Portuguese silver coinage of the early sixteenth century. The cross is bold and evenly proportioned, consistent with the hammered die technique of the Lisbon Mint. The design is framed by a double beaded circle. The surrounding Latin legend reads + IOHAИES:R:P:ET:A:DG, repeating the royal titulature of João III found on the obverse, as was conventional for Portuguese tesões of this type. |
