| Obverse description | The obverse displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms in cross formation at center: four escutcheons each charged with five roundels (quinas) arranged in saltire, flanked by two escutcheons to the sides and one each at top and bottom, forming the characteristic quintupled shield cross of Portugal. The arrangement is struck in hammered relief on an irregularly shaped flan. A partial Latin legend reading PHILIPPVS I D G REX PORT ET AL (Philip I, by the Grace of God King of Portugal and the Algarves) runs along the outer border, partially visible due to the irregular flan edge. The design is characteristic of late sixteenth-century Iberian hammered coinage, with a beaded inner border framing the central armorial device. |
