Obverse description The crowned Portuguese royal arms, comprising the traditional escutcheon of five bezants arranged in a cross upon a white field, surrounded by seven castles on a red border, occupy the central field. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown rendered in relief. The peripheral legend reads + ALPHONSVS · VI · D G · REX · P, identifying King Afonso VI by name and title in Latin. The overall style is characteristic of hammered Portuguese silver coinage of the mid-seventeenth century, with an irregular flan typical of the period.
