Obverse description Central field displays the Portuguese royal shield, bearing the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) with castles on the bordure, all surmounted by a small cross above the shield. The shield is set within a plain inner circle, surrounded by a beaded border enclosing the circular Latin legend. The die work is typical of the rough, hand-cut style characteristic of hammered medieval Portuguese coinage.
