Obverse description Central field bears the Portuguese royal shield displaying five escutcheons in cross formation, each charged with bezants, within a plain inner circle. The shield is surmounted by a crown and flanked by the wings of an eagle, a heraldic device associated with Fernando I. The circumferential legend reads FERNANDVS REX PORTV in Gothic Latin characters, partially visible along the coin's irregular flan. The overall design is struck in a bold medieval heraldic style typical of late 14th-century Iberian hammered coinage.
