Obverse description Central field occupied by the Portuguese royal shield, displaying five escutcheons arranged in a quincunx pattern, each charged with bezants, within a pointed heraldic border typical of the period. The shield is set within a plain inner circle surrounded by a beaded border. The circumferential Latin legend FERNANDVS REX PORTVGAL runs along the outer margin, partially visible on the irregularly shaped flan, in Gothic lettering characteristic of late 14th-century Iberian coinage.
