Naser al-Din Shah ruled Iran for nearly half a century before an assassin's bullet ended his reign in May 1896 — making late issues like this one among the last struck under his authority. He had been shot at the Shah Abdol Azim shrine, returning from ceremonies marking his jubilee year. The Zolgharnein epithet, referencing Dhu al-Qarnayn, was a honorific applied to the Shah on coinage of this period.
KM#930 is among the smaller fractional gold issues of the late Qajar series, produced at a time when the Iranian treasury was under considerable strain from foreign concessions and court expenditures.
