Wolfgang von Schrattenbach governed the Bishopric of Olomouc from 1711 until his death in 1738, a tenure long enough to produce a coherent coinage series but historically overshadowed by his role as patron of the young Mozart family — it was Schrattenbach who, decades later, would employ Leopold Mozart in Salzburg, though that connection postdates this issue. The Olomouc mint operated under direct episcopal authority throughout this period, answerable to Vienna only in matters of silver fineness.
The ten-year span of this half thaler's production suggests multiple die marriages, though no authoritative variety census specific to KM#424 has been established in the major references.
