Obverse description Three-quarter facing bust of Duke Ulrich III, turned slightly to the left, wearing a high-crowned hat. The legend encircles the bust and is interrupted by five small shields of arms arranged around the periphery, two of which appear at the bottom of the field. The portrait displays the characteristic Renaissance style of mid-sixteenth century German coinage.

Additional information

Ulrich III ruled Mecklenburg-Güstrow following the partition of Mecklenburg in 1555, which divided the duchy between the Güstrow and Schwerin lines — a dynastic arrangement that produced a proliferation of separate coinages from what had previously been a unified territory. This half thaler falls within the first decade of serious taler-denomination silver production across the smaller north German duchies, driven largely by new silver supplies filtering through from Joachimsthal and the Harz mining operations.

Kunzel 120 B indicates a specific die pairing within a short three-year emission window.
