Berg was a Rhenish duchy that passed to Maximilian IV Joseph of Bavaria in 1799 through the extinction of the Wittelsbach-Sulzbach line. The coinage struck under his brief tenure there — before Napoleon reorganized the region entirely and installed Joachim Murat as Grand Duke in 1806 — represents one of the shortest autonomous minting episodes in the duchy's history. Production effectively ended when Berg was absorbed into the Napoleonic satellite structure.
The .750 fineness is notably below the standard of contemporary Bavarian issues, reflecting Berg's distinct mint traditions rather than any debasement.
