| Additional information |
Maximilian III, Archduke of Austria and Grand Master of the Teutonic Order from 1590 until his death in 1618, used the Order's coinage partly as a vehicle for personal dynastic ambition — he had already failed twice in bids for elective kingship, first in Poland in 1587 and later in Transylvania. The Order's Mergentheim mint produced this half thaler at a moment when the institution was more territorial lord than crusading brotherhood, its Prussian lands long since lost to secularization under Albert of Brandenburg in 1525.
Hahn 19a distinguishes a specific die pairing within the type; collectors working this series should cross-reference Dudik 193 carefully, as attribution errors between adjacent varieties are routine.
