Additional information

Amoena Amalia of Anhalt, wife of Ludwig I of Anhalt-Köthen, died in December 1625 at age thirty-one. Ludwig was a founding member of the Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft — the first major German-language literary society — and the production of memorial coinage at her death reflected both his personal grief and the court culture he cultivated. Anhalt-Köthen was a small principality with limited minting activity, which makes surviving pieces from this issue genuinely scarce rather than artificially so.
