Obverse description Central six-fold quartered shield of arms of Duke Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, surmounted by three ornate crested helmets with elaborate mantling. The shield displays the dynastic quarters including Brunswick lions rampant, Wolfenbüttel, and associated territories. The heraldic composition is rendered in the bold Renaissance style typical of late 16th-century German coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the entire design, citing the titles of Duke Julius.

Reverse description Crowned double-headed imperial eagle displayed in the field, with the orb bearing the denomination mark '1/2' on its breast, flanked by four small shields of arms of the Holy Roman Empire. The spread wings of the eagle are rendered with fine feather detail characteristic of the period. A Latin motto legend encircles the design, referencing the self-consuming candle motif that gives this issue its name 'Lichttaler', reading ALIIS INSERVIENDO CONSUMOR ('I am consumed in serving others').
