John Gottfried II von Guttenberg's tenure as Prince-Bishop of Würzburg lasted only from 1684 to 1698, and his coinage output was modest relative to his more prolific predecessors. The Bishopric was still absorbing the economic damage of the Thirty Years' War decades after its conclusion, and large silver issues from this period were struck in limited numbers for ceremonial and diplomatic purposes rather than general circulation. Surviving half-thalers from this reign are correspondingly scarce.
