1/2 Thaler - John Ernest VIII Death

John Ernest VIII died in January 1729 after a reign of just four years over Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, one of the smaller Ernestine duchies produced by the relentless partition of Saxon territories through inheritance law. Memorial half-thalers of this type were a standard obligation of dynastic legitimacy — the ruling house was expected to mark a prince's death in silver regardless of how brief or unremarkable the reign. The Ernestine branch had been fragmenting since the late sixteenth century, and by 1729 the duchy itself was financially precarious enough that such issues were minted in limited runs.
