Jakob Ernst von Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn served as Prince-Bishop of Olomouc from 1738 until his death in 1745, a tenure almost entirely consumed by the chaos of the War of the Austrian Succession. Silesia — the economic engine of the Habsburgs — fell to Frederick the Great in 1742, the same year this half thaler was struck, sending the region's monetary administration into prolonged disruption. Olomouc itself was besieged by Prussian forces in 1758, though the city held.

The Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn family had deep roots in Moravian ecclesiastical politics stretching back to Karl von Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn, whose contentious 17th-century episcopate ended in imprisonment.
