Beschrijving keerzijde Nine lines of Latin inscription filling the entire field, recording the biographical and regnal data of Duke Henry Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. The text states his date of birth (15 October 1564), date of death (20 July 1613), his lifespan of 48 years, 9 months, and 5 days, and his reign of 24 years, 2 months, and 17 days. The lettering is bold and deeply struck in the hammered style typical of early seventeenth-century German memorial coinage, with dots used as word separators throughout.

Aanvullende informatie

Henry Julius, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, died in Prague in July 1613 while attending the imperial court of Rudolf II's successor Matthias — far from his territory and in the middle of ongoing confessional tensions that would, within five years, ignite the Thirty Years' War. Death memorial coinages were a well-established practice among Protestant German princes of this period, serving dynastic and political functions as much as commemorative ones. His successor Frederick Ulrich inherited a principality already under considerable financial and religious strain.

Welter 657 is the half thaler denomination within a broader memorial emission that included multiple values struck the same year.
