Gotthard Kettler was the last Master of the Livonian Order, and these half thalers were struck during the Order's death throes — the years of the Livonian War, when Ivan the Terrible's forces were systematically dismantling the confederation's territorial control. By 1561, Kettler had negotiated the Pacta Subiectionis, dissolving the Order entirely and converting himself into the first Duke of Courland under Polish-Lithuanian suzerainty. Coins struck in his name at Wenden span that precise constitutional rupture.
Wenden — modern Cēsis in Latvia — served as the Order's administrative stronghold. The mint there ceased operations as a Livonian Order facility the moment the dissolution took effect.
