Nassau was reorganized as a duchy under French pressure in 1806, with Frederick William navigating the Confederation of the Rhine's demands while consolidating territory from over a dozen previously separate Nassau lines. The 1809 coinage reflects that brief window of nominal independence before Napoleonic levies and conscription began draining both the treasury and the population.
