Franz Josef I of Liechtenstein — not to be confused with the Austrian emperor of the same name — ruled the principality from 1772 until his death in 1781, making his coinage issues both brief and scarce. Liechtenstein's own mint production was extremely limited; most pieces attributed to the principality during this period were struck under contract at external facilities operating within the Holy Roman Empire's monetary framework.
The half thaler denomination saw minimal circulation within Liechtenstein itself, whose tiny population and economy had little need for large silver coinage.
