Franz I ruled the Habsburg domains primarily as consort to Maria Theresa, and his coinage authority was never straightforward — the imperial title came through the Holy Roman Empire, while the Austrian hereditary lands were hers. The half thaler issues of this period were struck across multiple Habsburg mints simultaneously, including Hall, Günzburg, and Prague, which accounts for the range of die quality and minor typographic variation collectors encounter across examples bearing identical catalog references.

Franz died in 1765 at Innsbruck, mid-series, leaving the coinage to transition abruptly to the joint reign designation of Maria Theresa and Joseph II.
