Additional information

Ernest Louis, Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, ruled one of the smaller and financially precarious German territories during the prolonged devastation of the late 17th century. The Nine Years' War had drained the region's treasury severely, and coinage from the 1690s reflects Hesse-Darmstadt's efforts to maintain monetary credibility despite chronic fiscal strain. Issues from this period are notably inconsistent in die quality, a consequence of working with underfunded mint operations rather than any technical incompetence.

Schütz V#2818 distinguishes this half thaler within a closely related series of Ernest Louis silver issues that catalogers have historically conflated.
