Reverse description The quartered arms of Hesse-Darmstadt displayed on an ornate oval shield surmounted by an electoral-style princely crown, flanked by two rampant lions as supporters standing on a hatched ground line. The shield quarters incorporate the Hessian lion, the striped arms of Thüringia, the cross of Hersfeld, and other dynastic symbols, all rendered in fine Baroque engraving. The date 1696 is divided to either side of the crown, and the mintmaster's initials I.A.R appear in the lower exergue. The circular Latin legend is set within a milled border.
