John VI of Anhalt-Zerbst died in 1667 after a reign defined largely by the slow recovery of his territory from the devastation of the Thirty Years' War. Anhalt-Zerbst had been among the harder-hit Protestant principalities, and the duchy's finances remained constrained well into the second half of the century. Memorial issues like this half thaler were a standard dynastic obligation rather than a celebration — struck to mark the passing of a ruler and circulated among the court and nobility as much as through commerce.
KM#14 is among the scarcer attributable pieces from this small mint's output in that decade.
