The "Glockenhalbtaler" designation refers to the bell metal used in its production — specifically, bronze salvaged from captured or melted church bells, a wartime expedient adopted during the Thirty Years' War. By 1643 the war was in its final grinding phase, with the Peace of Westphalia still five years away, and Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel had endured decades of occupation, shifting alliances, and fiscal strain that made conventional silver supplies unreliable.

Welter 829 is among the better-documented varieties of this type. The bell-metal sourcing gives surviving examples an occasionally uneven surface character distinct from standard milled silver of the period.
