| Descrizione del dritto | Central device features the large crowned quartered arms of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, displaying multiple heraldic quarters including lions and other dynastic charges, supported by decorative cartouche mantling on either side. A princely crown surmounts the shield. The encircling legend reads AUGUSTUS HERTZOG ZU BRAUNS U LUNA along the inner border within a beaded or denticulated rim. The overall heraldic composition is characteristic of mid-17th century German princely coinage, rendered in the hammered technique with bold relief. |

August the Younger, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, died in 1666 at the age of 83 — one of the longest-lived rulers of any German principality in the seventeenth century. This 1661 issue was struck just five years before his death, during a reign that had stabilized Wolfenbüttel after the catastrophic disruptions of the Thirty Years' War. August was also among the most significant book collectors in Europe; his library at Wolfenbüttel, now the Herzog August Bibliothek, held over 135,000 volumes by his death.
Welter 832 is consistent with the larger thaler coinage of the period, struck at the Zellerfeld mint.
