Anna II von Limburg served as abbess of Herford from 1520 until her death in 1565, presiding over the institution during the most turbulent decades of the Reformation. Herford's imperial abbey held the status of a reichsunmittelbar institution — answerable directly to the emperor, not to any intervening bishop — which gave it the legal standing to strike its own coinage. That right was exercised sparingly, and half-thaler denominations from Herford are among the rarest products of any Westphalian ecclesiastical mint.
