Albert of Hohenzollern was Grand Master of the Teutonic Order when these half thalers were struck — but not for long in any orthodox sense. In 1525 he dissolved the Order's Prussian branch entirely, converted to Lutheranism on Luther's personal advice, and secularized its territories into the Duchy of Prussia under Polish suzerainty. These coins were struck just years before that rupture, during a period when Albert was already in open conflict with Poland and desperately financing military resistance.
The dating span of 1520–1521 corresponds directly to the Polish-Teutonic War, the Order's last major armed campaign.
