Obverse description The arms of Zürich displayed as a heraldic achievement at centre: an oval shield per bend sinister, the upper half plain (argent) and the lower half diagonally lined (azure), surmounted by a crested helm adorned with a plumed crest. Two rampant lions serve as supporters, one to the dexter and one to the sinister, each facing the central shield. The composition rests on an ornate baroque cartouche with foliate and floral embellishments at the base. The circumferential Latin legend MONETA REIPUBLICAE TURICENSIS. runs along the upper periphery of the coin.

Reverse description The field of the reverse is dominated by a wreath of laurel and olive branches, tied at the top with a decorative ribbon bow and bound at the bottom, encircling a three-line inscription in the field. Within the wreath, the Latin motto IUSTITIA ET CONCORDIA is rendered in two words on separate lines, followed by the date 1780 with a stop, all in capital serif lettering. The plain, unadorned field within the wreath gives prominence to the civic motto, reflecting the Enlightenment republican ideals of the issuing city-state. The overall design is austere and dignified, characteristic of late eighteenth-century Swiss cantonal coinage.
