Reverse description Central design consists of an ornate cross composed of four interlaced double-B monograms (the cipher of the Bernese Republic), arranged symmetrically around a central point to form a bold cruciform pattern with elaborate curvilinear flourishes at each quadrant. The denomination mark '1/2' appears at the centre of the cross. The peripheral legend, reading the religious motto, encircles the design and incorporates the date 1679, with small star or dot stops separating the words. The whole is enclosed within a toothed or beaded border consistent with milled coinage of the period.
