Obverse description Central field dominated by the Basel crosier (Bischofsstab), the heraldic arms of the city, rendered in high relief within a beaded inner circle. Four trefoil or clover-leaf ornaments are positioned at the diagonal angles flanking the central device. The date 1623 appears within the surrounding circular legend, which reads MONETA · NOVA · VRBIS · BASILIENSIS · 1623 : in Latin capitals, distributed around the full circumference. The overall style is consistent with early seventeenth-century German hammered silver coinage.
