Obverse description Facing figure of Saint John the Evangelist, the patron saint of Lübeck, seated on a throne and holding an eagle-topped sceptre in his left hand, with a book in his right; a halo surrounds his head and a small star appears above. At the base of the figure, the city arms of Lübeck — a quartered shield with a cross and chequered field — are displayed on a cartouche, with the date 1623 divided across its lower edge. An inner beaded border frames the design, with the circular legend occupying the outer field.
