Obverse description Central device depicts the Hamburg city arms: a three-towered castle gate with portcullis rendered in high relief, characteristic of the city's heraldic tradition. The castle is shown with two flanking towers and a central taller tower, each surmounted by a small turret. A circular beaded border frames the central device. The peripheral legend reads MONE. NO. CIVI. HAMBVR, interrupted at the top by the last two digits of the date, here appearing as 8Z (representing 82 for 1582). The overall design is consistent with the hammered coinage style of late sixteenth-century Hamburg municipal issues.
