| Obverse description | Central field displays the crowned Royal Arms of Scotland — a shield bearing the rampant lion of Scotland — surmounted by an open crown of multiple fleurs and crosses. The initials M and R (Maria Regina) flank the shield to left and right respectively, serving as royal monogram marks. The shield is depicted in a plain escutcheon form characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century Scottish hammered coinage. A circular Latin legend runs around the periphery, interrupted by pellet stops. The overall style is consistent with the artistic conventions of the Edinburgh Mint under Mary I. |
