| Reverse description | The reverse features the conjoined FM royal cypher of Francis and Mary as the central device, crowned with a crown of three fleur-de-lis and two crosslets, consistent with the obverse crown type. A crowned fleur-de-lis appears to the left of the monogram and a crowned thistle to the right, symbolising France and Scotland respectively. These flanking charges are rendered in a bold, simple hammered style characteristic of the Edinburgh mint's output of this period. The circumferential Latin legend, taken from Revelation 5:5, encircles the design, with the date 1560 incorporated into the legend at the close. The reverse composition effectively unifies the heraldic symbolism of both kingdoms under a scriptural motto of royal authority. |
