Francis and Mary's coinage posed an immediate political problem: how to represent a Scottish queen and her French husband-king on currency acceptable to both kingdoms. The solution — pairing their facing portraits — was adopted from French medallic convention rather than Scottish minting tradition, making this issue a deliberate diplomatic artifact. Francis held the crown matrimonial of Scotland from the marriage in April 1558, and his death in December 1560 ended this joint coinage abruptly after barely two years of production.
The Sp#5419 classification places this among the first type of the second coinage period, distinguished from the subsequent type by the arrangement of the royal titles in the legend.
