Louis XII ordered the teston struck beginning in 1514 as part of a broader effort to rationalize French silver coinage after decades of monetary fragmentation among competing regional issues. The half-teston followed necessarily, providing a divisional piece for everyday transactions. Louis died in January 1515 — less than a year after this denomination was authorized — making the entire Louis XII teston series among the shortest-lived in the French royal sequence.
