| Obverse description | Youthful laureate and draped bust of Charles IX facing right, wearing armour with a decorative collar and a ribbon tied at the nape of the neck. The portrait is rendered in a naturalistic Renaissance style typical of mid-sixteenth-century French royal coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the effigy, reading CAROLVS VIIII DEI G FRANC REX, with the mint mark F visible in the lower field below the bust. The coin's irregular flan and hammered technique lend the surfaces a characteristically uneven relief. |
