背面描述 Crowned shield of France bearing three fleurs-de-lis arranged in the traditional French royal heraldic pattern, flanked on either side by a crowned letter C, the royal cipher of Charles IX. The entire composition is surmounted by a large royal crown. The peripheral legend, separated by ornamental stops, runs continuously around the coin and incorporates the date MDLXII and the mint letter Y at the conclusion of the inscription.

附加信息

Charles IX was thirteen years old when this coin was struck, two years into a reign administered entirely by his mother Catherine de Medici. France in 1562 was already fracturing along confessional lines — the Massacre of Vassy occurred in March of that year, igniting the first of eight Wars of Religion that would consume the kingdom for the next four decades. Coins of this reign circulated through a country increasingly unable to agree on anything, including who legitimately held authority to issue them.
