Beschrijving voorzijde Bearded bust of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V facing right, crowned, with the legend partially visible around the periphery. The portrait is rendered in a crude hammered style typical of Sicilian mint production of the period, with the emperor's features simplified but identifiable. The legend CAROLVS : IMP • R • I appears around the effigy, referencing his imperial title. The fields are irregular and slightly uneven due to the hammered flan. A dotted or beaded border frames the design.

Aanvullende informatie

Carlo V ruled Sicily as an absentee king throughout this period, governing through a succession of viceroys while his attention remained fixed on the Ottoman advance into the Mediterranean and the Protestant crisis in the north. The bearded portrait distinguishes this type from earlier clean-shaven issues — Charles adopted the beard around 1525, reportedly after his victory at Pavia, and Spanish royal portraiture followed accordingly.

The MIR range spanning three catalog numbers reflects meaningful die variation across nearly two decades of production at the Palermo mint.
