Obverse description Bearded bust of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V facing right, crowned, with the legend partially visible around the periphery. The portrait is rendered in a crude hammered style typical of Sicilian mint production of the period, with the emperor's features simplified but identifiable. The legend CAROLVS : IMP • R • I appears around the effigy, referencing his imperial title. The fields are irregular and slightly uneven due to the hammered flan. A dotted or beaded border frames the design.
