Carlo III here refers to the future Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI, who ruled Sicily only from 1720 to 1735 following the War of the Spanish Succession — a conflict that saw the island traded between Austria, Savoy, and Spain in the space of just a few years. Austrian control was confirmed by the Treaty of The Hague in 1720, and coinage bearing his name began almost immediately as a straightforward assertion of new authority. The Palermo mint struck these small silver pieces in modest quantities, and survival rates for this denomination are low given how aggressively the fractional tarì circulated in everyday Sicilian commerce.
