Nasir Shah Khalji ruled Malwa from 1500 until his death in 1510, though this issue dates to the earlier portion of his reign. The Malwa Sultanate, landlocked in central India and centered on Mandu, maintained its own robust silver coinage tradition largely independent of Delhi — a deliberate assertion of political autonomy that persisted through successive dynasties ruling from that plateau fortress. The half tanka denomination served active trade circulation across the Deccan frontier markets.
The Khalji sultans of Malwa are frequently confused with the earlier Delhi Khalji dynasty; the two are distinct lineages. Nasir Shah's coinage is catalogued across at least three major reference systems, suggesting reasonably consistent scholarly attention to this series.
