Giyath al-Din Muhammad II ruled Gujarat during a period of considerable administrative consolidation under the Muzaffarid dynasty, though his reign was largely overshadowed by the longer tenures of his father Ahmad Shah I and his successor Mahmud Begarha. The half tanka denomination in silver served the middle tier of Gujarat's commercial economy, which by the mid-fifteenth century was deeply integrated into Indian Ocean trade networks running through Cambay.
Sultanate of Gujarat coinage from this period is frequently underdated in collections due to the difficulty of reading Hijri dates on small-flan silver fractions.
