Beschrijving voorzijde Draped bust of Sophia, Electress of Hanover and heiress to the British throne, facing right, wearing a crown and flowing robes, her hair elaborately dressed and partially covered by a veil or mantle. The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine baroque detail in the hair and drapery. A circular Latin legend surrounds the effigy, reading SOPH.D.G.EX.STIRP.EL.PAL.EL.VID.BR.ET LVN.M.BRIT.HAERES, identifying her as born of the Electoral Palatine line, widowed Electress of Brunswick and Lüneburg, and heiress to Great Britain. A star separates the beginning and end of the legend.

Aanvullende informatie

Sophia of Hanover died on June 8, 1714, just weeks before Queen Anne of Britain — the death that would have made Sophia the first Hanoverian monarch of Great Britain. She was 83 and collapsed while walking in the gardens at Herrenhausen. Her son George Louis inherited both the electorate and the British succession, departing for London that autumn. This mourning issue was struck almost immediately after her death, before the political situation had fully resolved itself.
