The Regency of Algiers occupied an awkward constitutional position throughout this period — nominally an Ottoman province, functionally an autonomous state running on corsair revenue and tribute. The half sultani was struck at the Jazā'ir mint under deys who acknowledged Ottoman suzerainty in name while conducting foreign policy, war, and coinage largely on their own terms. The decade bracketed by these dates saw the Regency weather the 1816 Anglo-Dutch bombardment of Algiers under Lord Exmouth, which devastated the harbor and effectively ended large-scale corsair operations.
French invasion came in 1830, ending the mint's operation entirely.
