Municipal authorities struck these pieces out of necessity — silver had effectively vanished from circulation as citizens hoarded it against an uncertain outcome. The siege coinage was explicitly temporary, intended to function only within the city walls for the duration of hostilities. Deventer would fall to Parma in 1587, but this piece predates that capitulation by nearly a decade.
