Utrecht's 1582 coinage falls squarely within the Union of Utrecht period, the defensive alliance signed just three years earlier that would eventually underpin the Dutch Republic. The city was actively financing resistance against Spanish Habsburg forces, and small silver fractions like this saw heavy transactional use supplying troops and provisioning garrisons along the Rhine and IJssel lines.
The KM# 10.1 designation distinguishes this from later municipal restrikes. Verhoeff's cataloguing of this type identifies minor die variations in the reverse legend spacing.
