Frederik III's Danish-Norwegian realm was, by 1653, still absorbing the catastrophic territorial losses of the 1645 Treaty of Brömsebro, which had ceded Jämtland, Härjedalen, and Gotland to Sweden. Crown finances were under sustained pressure, and the speciedaler coinage of this period reflects an aggressive attempt to assert monetary authority at a moment when that authority was genuinely in doubt.
The Type II designation distinguishes this from the earlier 1651–52 issue by die differences catalogued by Brekke; the two types are frequently confused in general collections. Specimens tend to surface from Baltic-region hoards more often than from Norwegian soil itself.
